Toronto City Hall weddings are paused from January 2027: what couples need to know
From January 1, 2027, Toronto City Hall has no wedding ceremonies booked, and the City isn't taking new City Hall reservations. It hasn't said when they'll return. If you were planning a simple City Hall "I do" next year, we're sorry. That's a tough bit of news. Here's what's changing, what isn't, and your options for a small, easy wedding in 2027.
The short version: 2026 City Hall weddings are still going ahead. 2027 ceremonies aren't being booked there. Marriage licences aren't affected.
What's happening at City Hall
As of early November 2026, here's what we know:
Ceremonies inside Toronto City Hall pause after December 31, 2026. The company that has run weddings in the City Hall chamber since 1994 is leaving ahead of planned renovations.
2026 weddings are still on. Ceremonies already booked for the rest of this year are going ahead.
2027 bookings aren't being taken. The City says it will contact affected couples about other civic venues. Old City Hall's 2027 ceremonies run on Thursdays only, for up to 25 guests. Within days of the news, January was fully booked and several March and April dates were taken.
Marriage licences aren't affected. You can still get your licence from the City. It's a separate process from booking a ceremony.
The City hasn't said when ceremonies will return to the building. For the latest, check the City of Toronto's wedding services page.
Your options for a small wedding in 2027
Another civic venue. Old City Hall and other City-run spaces are the closest thing to the original. Expect limited days, short ceremonies and calendars that fill fast. A good fit if you want the civic tradition and your date is flexible.
An officiant, anywhere. Hire a licensed officiant and marry in a park, a restaurant or your living room. Total freedom, but you're handling the space, the weather and the logistics.
A micro wedding studio. A private, light-filled room booked just for you, with the officiant and photographer handled in one booking. Indoors, so the weather never gets a vote. Lovely if you picked City Hall because it was easy, and you'd love better photos.
